George Downs presents a new perspective on Wilhelm Pfaender, one of the principal founders of New Ulm.  Dubbed “The Grand Old Man of New Ulm” at his passing, Pfaender rose from working class environment in Germany to be responsible for many significant achievements in Minnesota civic life and politics. In presenting this brief summary of a remarkable life, Mr. Downs focuses on the character traits that are necessary to become a leader and achiever in a new world setting.
