Lunch and a Bite of History: “History from the Balcony: Community Theater in New Ulm”

April 7 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

FREE

Presented by Daniel Groebner

Live plays have entertained audiences in New Ulm since its earliest days. Turner Hall’s home talent drew crowds for German-language plays, and its large new theater (1901) attracted nationally prominent shows. Alas, the Turner Theater burned down in 1952.

Local actors met, rehearsed, sold tickets, and performed wherever they could find space, then cleaned up. The Pioneer Players (conceived in 1963) and the New Ulm Actors Community Theater (2003) were the most successful of these grassroots groups. Hanska’s Liberal Union Hall often hosted the Pioneer Players.

In 2014, actors and investors acquired New Ulm High School’s auditorium. Today, State Street Theater Co. has a home stage, proficient management, and fundraising ability. With continued volunteerism and public support, performing arts in the New Ulm area will prosper.
