Bits and Bites of History: Robert Kaping

October 5, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Gavin Klabechek (11th grade) and his teacher, Mr. Stewart, hail from North Lakes Academy in Forest Lake, Minnesota. In early 2023, they were honored by the National History Day organization to be one of sixteen student and teacher teams in the nation to take part in the Sacrifice for Freedom®: World War II in the Pacific Student & Teacher Institute. The program is part of a national effort to research fallen World War II veterans from across the country and publish profiles of these Silent Heroes online at

The veteran Gavin and Mr. Stewart selected to profile is Storekeeper Second Class Robert E. Kaping of New Ulm, who lost his life aboard the U.S.S. Drexler off the shores of Okinawa in May of 1945. As part of their experience, Gavin and Mr. Stewart researched the early life and military experience of SK2 Kaping over a period of six months and visited his memorial at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
